14:Hope works with an orphanage in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia that directly supports both orphan care and orphan prevention.  This non-profit orphanage was founded by a philanthropic Ethiopian woman who was deeply concerned for the coming generations of Ethiopian children.  While caring for orphaned children she found that in many cases the children are relinquished by widows who simply can not feed or provide the basic needs for their child/children.  These women typically have no trade skills and thus can not work in the local community.  Ultimately these widows are in such difficult circumstance they know that if they continue to try and care for their children, their sons or daughters will most likely die of malnutrition or disease if they do not release them to the care of a local orphanage.  With the heart wrenching reality of a mother having to give up her children because she can not provide the basic necessities of life, a new hope was born to prevent this separation from becoming a reality.  This new hope is realized through certification courses in which at risk widows can learn a fruitful trade to provide necessities for their families.  The women in this program are empowered through courses teaching them skill sets such as: chef/catering, coffee roasting, hair stylist, jewelry making, sewing, and weaving textiles. Approximately 40-50 women in each semester will learn a new skill set that will allow them to keep their family together.
