Desire to do more
After finalizing their own adoption in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Chase and Jillian Kerlin realized a need far greater than that of their son Eliyas. The conditions in which some of these children survive day in and day out can be dreadful. With approximately 6.6 million orphans in Ethiopia alone, it wouldn't appear that a single family could even put a dent in this epidemic. With the ultimate understanding that if they did nothing it gave the children no hope at all, they decided to help in an industry they knew well - Retail. Their passion to see as many children as possible receive the basic needs of life became the foundation of 14:Hope in 2013. The very name 14:Hope represents the gift they found through their son Eliyas. The "14" was inspired by John 14:18 in which Christ says "I will not leave you as orphans, I will come to you." which they believe was their call to adopt an older child as their first. The "Hope" is the realization that if we do nothing, the alternative for these precious children is dismal; we have to hope that things can change for these children. While spending weeks in Addis Ababa at the orphanage bonding with their son, they were able to experience the orphan prevention side of the organization that had provided amazing care for their son. This arm of enablement provides useful skill set training to widows at risk of having to relinquish their children due to challenges finding work in the community. After working with the widows training at these classes, we were able to work together to fine tune products. These hand crafted creations allow the widows to provide the basic needs for their families while being a blessing to someone throughout the world. It is because of people like you that these widows in Ethiopia can provide food, shelter, medicine, and most importantly allow the families to stay together.
